Philippine Report for Monday (4/17/06)
April 17, 2006
from Harry Osborne in Tuguegarao, Luzon, Philippines

Mike Lusby arrived safely to Manila on Saturday evening. I had gotten back to Manila from GenSan earlier that day and met him at the airport about 11:30pm. We stayed the night in Manila and flew Sunday to Tuguegarao on a flight scheduled for 9am. Our plane was late leaving and did not arrive here in Tuguegarao until about 11:30am. We went immediately to drop our bags off at the hotel and return to Rody and Tessie’s house for lunch. It was great to see all of the Gumpad family again as they have become like my own family. The food was as good as always!

After lunch, we all went different ways to various congregations to preach. The result of all of the preaching efforts by the various groups in and around Tuguegarao was that 31 were baptized. Steve Wallace had preached in the northern province of Kalinga for the previous week where 52 were baptized. The follow-up of the Filipino brethren to our work in Mindanao has also brought a number of baptisms, though I am uncertain as to the exact number. In all, it has been a very profitable trip so far with well over 100 having been obedient to the gospel to this point.

We started our part in the preacher training classes today. Mike Lusby had a morning class surveying the Minor Prophets. Steve Wallace had one morning OT survey class and one afternoon NT survey class. I had a morning class on the work of a preacher which is a textual study of 1st Timothy, 2nd Timothy and Titus. My afternoon classes were on “Church History” and “Issues That Divided Brethren.” We had excellent interest in all classes with the students showing very good interest and participation.

As always, we had a number of visitors who sat in on both morning and afternoon classes. Many of them were former students in these training classes. It was a very good day of classes and we are very encouraged by the study habits of the students and visitors.

Our evening worship service just ended. One student led the singing, another led the prayer and a third preached the lesson for the hour. After a review of their efforts, we spent a little time introducing the students to the use of their center-column reference Bibles and the maps. We will continue to work more on the use of these tools as well as continuing to drill on the use of the concordance and Bible dictionary.

Today’s temperature was 39 or 40 C, depending on which radio station was right. Either way, it works out to over 100 F with well over 90% humidity. In other words, it is hot! The Filipinos are even talking about how hot it is this summer. (April is their hottest summer month here.) The air conditioning in the class building dulls the heat, but does not make it cool. When you leave the class, however, it is brutally hot.

Must get this report off so we can head back to the hotel and get some rest. Please keep the students, us and this effort in your prayers as we remember you in our prayers.

Brotherly, Harry O.
